The Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl ("HRRB") is a unique reading competition offered to 4th & 5th grader readers at Jackson.
The "Reading bowl" is a competition between schools and uses questions from the Georgia Book Award nominees in a quiz bowl-like format.
There are 4 competitions: District, Regionals, Divisional and State. At each round, the top 2 schools move on in a single elimination process.

Meet the Jackson Reading Bowl Coaches:
Hey there! My name is Kim Makurat and I am a fourth grade teacher. I am so honored to be at Jackson Elementary. This will be my fourth year at this school. I have previously taught at Sarah Smith Elementary for twelve years. I LOVE teaching and love the look on the kids faces when they are having fun and engaged in learning! I look forward to a wonderful year with you and your child. Roll Tide!!!!
My name is Kelly Maguire and I have taught for 15 years. I started my career as a Kindergarten teacher and took pride in teaching my students how to read. My most rewarding moments in the classroom were when my students had those “ah-ha” moments that made them love learning!! I became a member of the Jackson team in 2008 as a 4th grade teacher. I've been the Media Specialist at Jackson since 2013 and have really enjoyed helping students become enthusiastic readers. My goal is to guide my students to books, which will give them a life long love for READING!! I look forward to preparing Jackson's Reading Bowl Team to place in this year’s HRRB competition. WAR EAGLE!!
